Why Is Goa In Trouble?
Hello, and happy Tuesday!
Let’s get the momentum going as we tackle another day in the world of business.
Today, we will talk about the recent chaos in Goa that may hurt several businesses. But, before we talk about it, here’s a dose of positivity for you:
Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts
Now, let’s get started…
The Goa Drama
Recently, the Goa Tourism Department took some serious action against a social media post that claimed foreign tourists are ditching the state in favor of places like Sri Lanka.
Yep, you read that right. They’ve lodged a police complaint about this post, and here’s why it’s creating so much buzz.
It all started with this tweet 👇
The post, made by entrepreneur Ramanuj Mukherjee, with around 22,500 followers on platform X (formerly Twitter), suggested that Goa is losing its appeal to foreign tourists.
Specifically, it claimed that Russians and Brits, who usually visit Goa regularly, are now opting for Sri Lanka instead. The entrepreneur even used a comparison between the number of tourists visiting Goa in 2019 versus 2023, hinting at a decline. It also implied that Indian tourists might start avoiding Goa, too, blaming rising costs and what they perceived as “exploitation.”
Now, the Goa Tourism Department isn’t having any of it. Rajesh Kale, the Deputy Director of Tourism, who filed the complaint, argues that this post is misleading and could cause significant damage to Goa’s tourism industry.
Moreover, according to him, the data used in the post isn’t verified, and the chart presented showing a decline in foreign visitors isn’t supported by any official tourism records.
But wait, it gets more interesting. Kale goes on to suggest that the post could be part of a hidden agenda to damage Goa’s image as a top tourist destination. That's a serious accusation, right? So, in the complaint, they’ve requested the cybercrime police to take swift action to prevent any potential harm to Goa’s economy or reputation.
To be continued…

Now, why is this matter with Goa so messed up?
This comes at a time when Goa’s tourism department is already under fire on social media for various issues, like high prices, limited options for taxis and hotels, and general dissatisfaction with the state’s infrastructure.
Here’s proof 👇
So, Goa is kind of on the defensive, trying to assure people that despite some challenges, it’s still a preferred location for both domestic and international tourists.
BTW this is a sign that the tourism department is closely watching social media chatter and taking it seriously. Given that Goa is entering its high tourist season, any negative sentiment could potentially affect visitor numbers, both from within India and abroad.
And with social media playing such a huge role in shaping public perception, the government seems to be doubling down on protecting its image, especially when it comes to unverified claims that could hurt its economy.
BTW, this is the entrepreneur’s response
So, it’s fascinating to see how social media posts, even ones with no real evidence, can spark such a strong response. What do you think about this situation?
So, that’s it for today! See you tomorrow 👋
