But before we begin, here’s a positive quote for the day
Believe you can, and you’re halfway there
With that in mind, let’s get started…
You’ll NEVER order from Zomato after reading this
A week ago, Hyderabad’s food safety officials were on a mission, and they weren’t taking any chances. With Diwali festivities drawing near and the demand for sweets and other seasonal foods on the rise, the task force decided it was the perfect time to make sure what’s on our plates is safe.
So, they launched a series of inspections targeting food establishments around the city - places you might never think would have issues, but as they uncovered, some did.
Over the last few days, the team flagged quite a few spots. Sweet shops preparing for Diwali, a busy momo outlet following a wave of health complaints, and several shawarma stands were all on the receiving end of some serious scrutiny.
But the inspection that really caught people’s attention? That would be the visit to Zomato’s Hyperpure warehouse in Kukatpally on October 29.
For those who don’t know, Hyperpure is Zomato’s full-on supply chain solution for the hospitality sector. It’s where hotels, restaurants, and caterers go for fresh produce, meat, seafood, and everything in between - packaging, kitchen equipment, you name it. So, if there’s any place you’d expect high standards, it’d be Hyperpure.

And, for the most part, they seem to have things in order. The warehouse has an official Food Business Operator (FBO) license, and it was displayed, as required, right there on the premises. They also had all the necessary paperwork - medical fitness certificates for their food handlers and pest control records, showing they were taking steps to keep things safe.
But as with most inspections, a closer look told a different story.
The task force found some major issues. The biggest red flag? They discovered 18 kilos of button mushrooms labeled with a packing date of October 30, which was the day AFTER the inspection.
That “future date of packing” raised eyebrows and set off alarms because it goes against food safety norms. Mislabeling like that can be a slippery slope to worse things. Food safety is all about trust and transparency, and when you mess with dates, it breaks that trust.
The task force didn’t stop there. They noticed flies buzzing around inside the warehouse and observed that parts of the facility were open directly to the outdoors without a proper insect-proof screen. You don’t need to be a food safety expert to know that’s an issue.
And while they were there, they saw some staff members without hair caps and aprons, basic things you’d expect in any food-handling facility.
What happened after that?
Well, according to Zomato’s CEO, Deepinder Goyal, this was simply due to a “manual typing error” on the vendor’s end. Hyperpure’s team actually caught the mislabeled mushrooms during their own quality check and rejected them right away. These mushrooms were never going to make it to customers.
Anyway, this inspection wasn’t a one-off event. Back in June, the same task force went to a Blinkit warehouse in Devar Yamjal. They found a lot of issues there, too: expired food items, signs of infestation, and unhygienic conditions overall.
So, that’s it for today! See you tomorrow 👋
