🔴Budget 2024
👉Kothari’s Demand for a ‘Golden’ Era
Sachin Kothari, Director of Augmont - Gold For All, highlighted key industry demands: a reduction in gold import duty from 15% to 10% and aligning silver import duties with gold under CEPA. He noted that some Bharat refineries import unrefined gold from LDCs duty-free, creating an uneven playing field.
Kothari also called for a single market regulator, tax-free interest on Sovereign Gold Bonds (if redeemed after eight years), GST-bonded warehouses, mandatory hallmarking, EMI options for jewelry, and commodity exchange lending/borrowing.
👉A pledge towards sustainability
Dr. Miniya Chatterji, Founding Director of Anant School for Climate Action and CEO of Sustain Labs Paris, emphasizes the need for the Union Budget 2024 to prioritize sustainable growth. She suggests focusing investments on renewable energy projects, green infrastructure, and sustainable agriculture. Reducing the GST on renewable energy components was one of her suggestions.
Additionally, she advocates for provisions to promote skilling and innovation in sustainability.

A new virus is taking over Bharat.
Kerala is on a health alert following the death of a 14-year-old boy from the Nipah virus.
Health Minister Veena George reported that 60 people are at high risk, with isolation and testing underway for those who had contact with the boy from Pandikkad.
Nipah is a zoonotic virus that gets transmitted from animals like fruit bats to humans. It is considered a priority pathogen by the WHO. Kerala has experienced multiple outbreaks since 2018, because of rapid urbanization and deforestation.

Should we be still hopeful about Byju's?
Insolvency proceedings against Byju's, once valued at $22 billion, are threatening to shut down the ed-tech giant’s operations
All of this started when the company failed to pay $19 million owed to the Indian cricket board for a sponsorship deal. This led to a tribunal freezing Byju's assets and suspending its board.
Byju’s CEO, Raveendran, is now worried that the insolvency could force thousands of employees to quit and lead to a complete shutdown of the company.
Byju’s operates in over 21 countries and employs around 27,000 people, including 16,000 teachers
